A short stroll from the centre of Whitby, yet tucked away in a quiet area just along the quay, Demeter House is named after the schooner that brought Count Dracula ashore. Whitby is full of tales and stories about Dracula, as this is where the Irish author, Bram Stoker, found inspiration for his novel. With its many festivals, such as the Goth Weekend and Folk Week, Whitby is a popular all year round resort, because even in the winter there is plenty to see and do. The whalebone arch, the swing bridge and harbour, the 199 steps and, of course, the Abbey, are some of the town’s iconic places of interest.
The cobbled streets are home to quirky little coffee shops, pubs and shops selling jewellery made from local jet. Whitby is justifiably famous for the quality of its fish and chip restaurants, but there are eating places to suit all tastes.
Demeter House is great for families as it is a spacious townhouse, set over three floors, with its own private parking. Within a short drive you are on the beautiful North Yorkshire Moors. With its stunning moorland landscape, picturesque villages and ancient abbeys, the National Park provides plenty of opportunities for walking, cycling or leisurely sightseeing.
Alternatively, you can take the steam train that leaves Whitby, stopping at Grosmont, home to the TV programme, ’Heartbeat’, or carry on down to the market town of Pickering. To the north of Whitby are coastal villages of Sandsend and Staithes, and to the south Robin Hood’s Bay and the Victorian seaside resort of Scarborough. A week isn’t long enough to enjoy all there is to see. Beach 600 yards. Shop and restaurant 300 yards, pub 200 yards
