Self catering holiday rental cottages near Ambleside

Ambleside claims to be one of the more relaxed towns in the Lake District offering fine food, ale and wine to compliment its fabulous setting between mountains and lake.

Historically, Ambleside has been home to visitors for 160 years, but it is during the last quarter of a century that has seen the town, with total support from local official bodies, ‘up its game’ in the provision of facilities for the tourist, whether they are hostellers or epicurean experts.

Self-catering accommodation went under the town elders’ magnifying glass long ago, and there is now first class accommodation, much of it pet-friendly, available in cottages, apartments, lodges and houses both in the town itself and in its outlying villages.

Staying near Ambleside, rock climbing and many things to do on holiday in The Lake District.

Ambleside is located very much at the hub of the Lake District in terms of travel. There are frequent bus services to the town, including national carriers, and the rail traveler can connect from Windemere which is approximately 4 miles away. It’s a convenient location to centre tours from, whether driving, walking or even cycling.

Ambleside has long been established as a centre for rock climbing in England, offering exciting opportunities for mountaineers of all ages and experience to climb the great outdoors and walk the picturesque uplands. However, don’t for one moment think that it’s all hiking boots, waterproofs and compasses. It’s a great town for a romantic break, for honeymooners or simply for a relaxing last-minute break away from work in beautiful countryside.

There is plenty of interest for those less inclined to roughing it in the great outdoors! There are small museums, galleries, open houses, churches and even a cinema to visit, each offering a wealth of information about the Lake District’s long heritage, and there’s and a great selection of specialist shops in the town. There are restaurants to suit all tastes, from fast food and café-style to high quality gourmet meals. And those who seek a genuine independent beer will find plenty to choose from in the friendly inns and pubs.

Lake Windermere certainly needs to be on any visitor’s agenda. You can take a motor launch trip on the lake from Waterhead, just south of the town. On the other hand you may care to hire your own rowboat. Or you may just prefer a gentle stroll by the harbor or through the landscaped gardens by the lakeside.

While there is no denying that the car is the most convenient method of transport for getting around the Lake District, especially if you want the best choice in cottage, chalet or other self-catering accommodation to make as your base for your stay, Ambleside is fast gaining a reputation for offering the visitor a quite enjoyable range of excursions both on foot, bike and by bus. Ambleside is no more than an hour’s drive from all of the many hundreds of attractions in Lakes District.
