English country holiday cottages to rent

Self-catering holiday cottages in Keswick, Lake District

The name 'Keswick' is purported to mean 'cheese farm' and was first noted as a settlement back in 1240. Its owes its origins as a market town to Thomas, Lord of the Manor of Derwentwater, who in 1276, was granted a charter to organise and hold a Saturday market by Edward I. Over 700 years later, the market is still going strong. In fact one of the town’s landmark buildings, the ancient Moot Hall in the Market Square, was not only used as a covered market, but has been used as a courthouse, a museum and even a prison, and is currently the home of the town’s friendly and helpful Tourist and National Park Information Centre.

Many visitors choose to stay in one of the many self-catering properties in and around the town and near the lake. This allows them the total freedom to come and go as they please, to explore the town, its attractions and the surrounding area, at leisure. And many of the cottages are pet-friendly, so the four-legged member of the family can come along too and enjoy the Lake District. There is a wide range of restaurants, pubs and cafes offering a range of fine and tempting Cumbrian menus, or even take your own menu ingredients back to your accommodation for a leisurely dinner followed by feet up over a relaxing bottle of wine.

Visit Keswicks market place

Keswick is currently gaining a name for itself internationally as the" outdoor clothing capital" of England, due to the number of national and local specialist retailers providing clothes of all descriptions and for all weathers. Some of the famous writers of the past, including Wordsworth, Coleridge, Southey, and Ruskin helped to bring the early tourists to experience the friendly town and wonderful surrounding scenery.

Like many small rural towns, the heart of Keswick is its Market Place, surrounded by shops and hotels. It was recently converted into a pedestrian priority area. It may only be a small town, but Keswick nevertheless has a range of shops and services that belie its compact size. The friendly welcome from staff - many of whom are the owner managers - in the shops and the weekly markets held around the Moot Hall is genuinely reminiscent of the days gone by.

Close by are two large public parks offering games facilities in open, garden and wooded settings. They are an important part of Keswick's well tended appearance which has won it several national awards, European commendation and, very importantly, the appreciation of its multitude of visitors.

The visitor has plenty to do in and around the town. There is the choice of four museums, art and craft galleries, a cinema, and the successful Theatre by the Lake which sees productions held there throughout the year.
